Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

Well a lot of the attention at the moment seems to be on Software interfaces for MSSIAH at the moment,
but all this mouse twiddling seems to be getting away from what i loved about the Prophet 64 in the first place.

I dont know about you, but i rock my Commodore 64 when i want to have a break from my fancy computer.

The best fun ive had, and i'm sure plenty would agree, is a twin 6581R4 SID2SID running Monosynth, all mapped out to a controller keyboard.
It's Moog Killer Mayhem!!

But what is the ultimate MIDI Controller for the job?

I'm using an Edirol PCR-30 but i think the Monosynth deserves better.
Maybe even something custom built? Built into the case P64 style perhaps?

The dream would be to have dedicated controls for everything, and an elegant solution for switching OSC waveforms with Ring Mod etc.

just putting it out there.....

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

maybe you could hack one of these UC-33 things. plenty of knobs, but can you scale them. and could the buttons be assigned to OSC Waveforms?

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

Best MIDI controller must be the remote sl series from Novation.. at least i think so smile it is also very VERY expensive!

Best solution for having dedicated controls modded into the C64 case MIDI style is probably to check out ucapps.de and build a small MIDI controller... yes, with a bit of technique it can get really small in physical size and easily can be incorporated into a breadbox - from there you can add all the knobs and buttons your heart desires, voila smile MSSIAH with all-integrated control surface. It can even be powered from the C64 PSU also...

But i never want breaks from my fancy computer wink i use the C64 to get the sounds i want and love and i know that mentioning ucapps.de here on this forum can easily get me scolded in a very severe way, but... i too wanted serious MIDI control over my SIDs, so i built a midibox SID. the only thing it cannot do is offer you the cool retro feeling when you're working with your C64, but it sounds a lot better than any C64 and it's a lot more powerfull than the majority of commercial synths on the market (to be honest it makes MSSIAH look and sound like 'my first keyboard').

Some guy made an mp3 with some sound examples of the standard patches from the midibox SID, and you can easily tell that it makes a lot of beautiful sounds that could never be produced with MSSIAH... have a listen smile http://www.subatomicglue.com/sidl0g/mbs … stereo.mp3 but remember this is only the 'lead' patches (what compares to monosynth in MSSIAH' there is no clips of the bassline engine or the drum engine... or the 'multi' engine which works just as MSSIAH sequencer except that midibox easily handles 8 SIDs smile

Anyway, i love my C64, really... but in my studio i enjoy a real synth instead

Not the ultimate controller by a long shot, but I got one of those old ART foot controllers for free a couple of weeks ago, and once my MSSIAH cart arrives (payment went through this weekend!) I'm going to see if I can make it useful (although it'll probably end up being a lot handier for using with LSDJ once I build an arduinoboy interface).

I could see it being useful for toggling waveforms and so on in monosynth via MIDI.

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

That sounds cool!

the problem i'm having with the waveform thing tho, is you need a button that can send a specific CC value.

my PCR 30 allows you to choose the CC number (obviously) but then you get an arbitrary 0=off, 127=on.

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

Hello,

I use a PCR-300: http://www.edirol.net/products/en/PCR-300/index.html
It has more pots and buttons and transport controls and ... than PCR-30 and it is not as expensive as Novation keyboards. OK, it is not the most confortable keyboard, but I was not afraid of damaging it in gigs (moreover, I never damage it!). But I have not used it yet with Monosynth.

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

All fine, but does it have the behavior that 'neutro' describes about PCR-30 in his post above ?!?!?

The trick is not to have tons of buttons, sliders, knobs and encoders, touchpad or whatever.. the trick is a flexible controller, able to define min/max values for example.. at least if you ask me wink

Re: Ultimate Hardware Controller for MonoSynth?

I just launch the PCR Editor V2 which is the software Edirol provides with the keyboard to edit the controls. When setting a CC for a button or a pot, I can set its min and max value. So yes, I can tell that the PCR-300 is flexible.

Multitouch controller for the Commodore 64. Would be nice to see MSSIAH to be controled with an iPhone or iPod Touch this way.
