PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

Time to start that topic for the drummer too. Basically my mostly used app (when I'll have the midi)

At the moment there are two BIG BIG CON's I'd like to share, hoping the will be fixed in nexr release. (and a asmall one)

1) SHOOOORT decay! The envelope is set just TOO SHORT! I know this has been done to improve poliphony, but when using 2SIDs with separate output it't not an issue, ands however who cares? The kick is long probably less than a beat. The originale 909 decay is VERY longer, can take a step iif distorded....A better policy of voice stealing would resolve the problem.

2) CANT DOUBLE THE INSTRUMENT! It would be nice (and easy to do) to output the same instrument from different voices. Like having TWO or THREE snares and redirecting them,. So one  can mix different sounds and shape interesting one. Probably one can want to sacrifice some instrument to shape a particula one.

Using the drummer in a setup with other isntrumentsa sounds dull in comparison, somethime using the full strendht of 3 voices of 2 sidd can give much more punch and control over parameters!

3) I think the FILTER should be used in a sequence, so one can ritmically filter what come out from the SID#1 or the AUDIO-IN signal. It would be very creative to have the sequencer running notes that are actually envelopped cutoffs that affects the signal...would be great...

What, no pro's? wink

I'm (slowly) getting to know the drummer and I have to agree with you about the lack of filtering. A built-in hpf and a long kick would be really nice for some Scott Brown/DJ Producer-style steppy sweeping action!

Re: PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

Contra:

- It cannot produce "state of the art" drums.
- No Wavetable (for own instruments)
- No multispeed (2x, 4x, 8x...)
- No Filtering

Re: PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

Could you define what "state of the art drums" means to you?
In terms of SID tunes, or in general (like compared to an 808?!?)?.

Ok, like that clicking sound, you won't get out from P64 drummer, right?

Re: PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

The question is: Did anyone submit his desired features to the Alien's wish list back in the days before the cart software was finished?

Since the Drummer wasn't on my high priority list I only did for Bassline and Monosynth, and was happy to see some of my requests in cart later on (while I'm sure other people were asking for the same stuff, too).

Re: PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

yep, seems Drummer is suited mainly for 'classic' (boring?) C64 drum sounds. the extra kick/snare presets on the cart are nice, but it'd be a lot more useful if it were set up as a 'drum synth' (though with the 909-esque interface i can see why they'd stick with 'stock' sounds). it is what it is, but i'd like to be able to really shape the sounds *and* use that programming interface. as it sits Drummer is a bit of a novelty, but quite capable of some crunchy (crusty?) beats...

Personally I feel the knobs give me enough variations to play with. I mean, I haven't seen any other c64-program where you can shape classic drum sounds in this way really easy. I don't see how you could take it beyond that, Jbuonacc?

Re: PROs and CONs of the DRUMMER

right on, i mean it's not like a real TR-909 gives you any more control over the sound really. smile i just wish that you could create, save, and recall your own drum sounds using a synthesis interface like found in Sequencer. i love the x0x drum programming scheme and even the parameter control that you are given, but the stock sounds don't go a long way. i find the hats pretty disappointing, and i don't have too much use for toms usually. not much i can do about that, i'd rather use my own sounds. oh well. smile
