I'm playing with MSSIAH for the first time, on a "brown key" c64. The chip is a 6581, with 1884 printed underneath. The board is a 251137 with a copyright date of 1983. There are no modifications to the system, other than a coat of paint and a blue LED.
When starting MSSIAH, I get as far as the main menu on most apps. I am able to enter diagnostics, disk manager, and PSID converter without issue. As far as apps go, I can get into the wave editor and the bassline app.
Whenever trying to get into the sequencer, mono synth, or drummer apps, all I get is a blue screen.
Has anyone else had any problems with this model of chip? Is this revision just '"too old for its own good"?
EDIT: removed part about born-on date, I mis-read the doc

In the hopes that my cartridge isn't connecting properly, I have "tightened" the contacts as explained in the getting started doc. This didn't help.

So, I bought a c64c, and all issues are resolved. I think the 6581 is just too old.

Sorry for bumping this thread. This is however exactly what my C64C gives me. If onef ever stumbles to this thread again I would ask more specifically about entering diagnostics (did the bank tests pass?)
As for my case:
MSSIAH starts fine, enter diagnostics, audio runs smoothly (1 and 2 SIDs), ports are responding, however the banks test won't go beyond the blue, (just freezes). I don't know if this is odd behavior or something that makes sense to someone. On occasion some of the apps will run (if not all, Sequencer froze the one time it worked), most success rate has the Wave-Player.
Are all the bank tests required to pass in order to use the MSSIAH?
As for banks failing I guess my old friend has some IC's going for retirement These tests should have been higher up in the menu hierarchy for more fine-grained testing..
I will look for to manually test timers and graphics banks if not too much of a hassle. If any advice where to look please share!

According to documentation, MSSIAH runs dandy on a 6581.
