I just picked up a C64C for $10 locally with an 8580 (!). Good deal, I think! It needed a new fuse, but now it works. Anyway, my old C64's with 6581R4 and 6581 didn't sound as good. The filters really are smoother, and it sounds better, at least in Prophet 64. Old games might sound better in the 6581.

I like the 6581 precisely because it doesn't sound like a generic synth.
Ok, it doesn't sound a whole lot like a 303, but how often do we hear that sound today? Far too much if you ask me. I use a SID because it sounds like a SID, not because it emulates something else. I do get what you mean about the filters working better and everything, but I don't actually want that sound, I want something unique.
What i'd really like is the ability to mix the square and saw waveforms, with PW mod controlled by the filter envelope, I think that'd be a unique sound (I can get it with the MONO but that's not the same somehow).
I'd also like to use one of the osc's for a sub bass generator using the TRI waveform. Now that would be fat!
I also want the moon on a stick....
Me too I prefer the old 6581. It sounds more SIDDISH and if I wanted a smooth synth I have plenty of analog and virtual analog in my studio.
Anyway I am definitely proud that a 8580 sounds nice, beyond my experimental needs.
That's why I plan to build a second SID2SID based on 8580s.

Exactly.
I'm going to build a SID2SID with an 8580 and a 6581 for two reasons:
1: People say it can't be done.
2: It will sound brilliant!
OH man.. oh man...
don't connect their voltage supplies together..

YES it would be great to be able to just switch from 6 to 8 in the same computer! brillant!
Still the bad thing is that you will need to build it for breadbox OR C64c, because they still have diffeerent voltages!

Or 9 to 12, which is what the sids use.

For the sequencer, it is nice to have the 6581, but for the filters on the "synth" parts of the cartridge, I prefer the 8580. With cynthcart though, I really like the 6581 (not the R4) version. It just sounds gritty and mean. Awesome.

I like to have many possibilitys like waveform mixing.
I prefer the 8085 (lucky to have a handfull of them =P )

Maybe your R4 has a fault. The R4 and R4 ar are just smaller versions of the same 6581, same sound.
But yes, cynthcart is a 6581 program for sure!! the grit on the filtered sine wave..OOH FU*K!
it would be posible to modify your c64 to have BOTH types of sid, or 2 sid2sid boards.. but the risk of damage and difficulty are major negatives.
2 commodores is easier, and ultimately, about the same price.
why not get another commodore? i don't know where you live, but they are at garage sales still in toronto.. once in a while.. for 20$ or so. YOu see them in newspaper classifieds too. ANd of course, ebay.. where i got 10 commodores..
then you can have all your dreams come true.

having two commodores bot with SID2SID requires having a total of FOUR machine, plus two spare one
That's why I'm triyng to do... 8)

I guess I could run 2 commodores, but that means two PSU's and two monitors. I can't be bothered with that.
I don't suppose anyone's ever noticed but the power supplies for the breadbin and the C64C are the same, they both present 9VAC & 5V. It is therefore conceivably possible that by interrupting the power supply to the second SID on a SID2SID, you could add a regulator to supply 9V DC to run an 8580. As far as i'm aware, no changes were made to the firmware controlling the 8580 and the filter caps would be on the SID2SID so it's pretty much a plug an play mod.
Now, if anyone has any broken 8580's that could be used to test this theory, i'd happily accept donations
This is a very good point. Usually breadbox PSU are stronger than C64c one.
Anyway if you fit 2 SID2SID in two commodores you don't really need 2 PSUs 2 Monitors etc, you can easily switch the CPUs when needed...

I occasionally pick up free Commodores or just for a couple of euros, way less than $20 (even Canadian ones ).
At this very moment even, there's this guy on a national auction site giving away a free C128!
He's got mail
The only thing I'm still looking for is a brown 1541 drive, so I can mod it to a parallel drive.
The 3 1541Cs I have, have this awkward pin1 thing that is connected to the track-hole
Can't mod those... but I digress...

that's the kind of sounds I have in my mind. Harsh....

I'm waiting for a 8580-C64 which I've bought from a guy right now. I already got a Sidstation, so I think a 8580-C64 will complete my studio quite well . It does sound better, though the 6581 sounds dirtier. They fit different tasks..
Will order a P64 later on

My sidstation and my c128 both have 6581r4. Its kind of the best of both worlds. That being said, I want a 8580! If I get a c64c, they all have the 8580 or no?
Some did some didnt, not even all the C128 have the 8580...
Offline
you can use both sids installed! im using a 8580+6581 on one sid2sid in one c64. this mod in somewhere here in this forum....
