Beta testing the MIDI interface

This post will make everybody turn green of envy!

I've got the MIDI interface! lol

Yesterday evening FirestARTer honoured me with his visit and along he brought one of 3 proto types of the MIDI interface.
We plugged it in a C64, hooked up a Behringer BCR2000 and a synthesizer with hardware sequencer and then FirestARTer showed me what the interface was capable of.

I can assure you one thing: you want it! big_smile

Syncing, playing along with the sequencer, adjust pots with MIDI controlers, choose patterns with key presses... and more!

FirestARTer asked me to do beta testing, to find any flaws, weird behaviour or unexpected workings.
And aren't you lucky?! I'll share my findings in this thread.

So if there's any particular thing you want me to try, post it here and I'll see what I can do.
As long as you don't ask me to compose a hit record that will pay all your bills wink

Oh, and I'll put footage on YouTube!

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

the Dtronics interface looks pathetic next to that T24-Tiger Panzer tank of a midi interface...

This is the most exciting news since i found out that I was not the father!

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

The PCB looks very tidy, good job!

I would like you to try this: generate lot of MIDI traffic by automating different parameters via CC and sending lot of near notes to see the reliability....

I want you to put loads of coffee over it. Bend it, bite it, jump on it to see the reliability....

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

TX for the pic - awesome wink

How about running Bassline or Monosynth in sync and sending lots of CC to the pots - does the clock stay tight?

Pitchwheel: Used for Glide in Keyboard mode or for Sync correction in Synchronize mode
P64 can't do Pitch Bend

Velocity: Only for Bassline, it is used for Accend: Pressing the Note 'hard' does accent, else just normal. Other P64 Softwares are not capable of it.

Program Changes: No, P64 is not capable of it.

Sysex: No

Midi-Clock: Stable, and with sync correction.

Aftertouch: Yeah, used as much as it is used in every Synthesizer wink

But let AXImaxi test all that stuff. Sometimes it is good if the functions are tried in a different way!

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

I have a question.. firmware updates?  Assuming you have a burner, will you be able to fix things in software?  Or d you anticipate fixing things in hardware?

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

All things will be fixable via Firmware upgrades. Hardware will stay as it is.

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

Any rough idea about a release date? I need to make sure I have the money.

@ AxiMaxi: Besides the already mentioned stuff, you could test doing some extreme tempo changes.

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

First I need some time to get acquainted with the hard- & software, since I haven't been using my music gear for a while.

Like, this morning, I lost MIDI contact with the interface, but FirestARTer's great SMS helpdesk helped me out. wink
(Last message I got was "Yes, RTFM! wink" which is, like, non existant lol)

What I plan to do is do a song with several kind of extremeties in it, like temp changes and loads of CC.
I'll put it on video and upload to YouTube, so you can see what happens.

Give me a week or two.

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

Yeah, yeah, I'll keep you posted in the mean time wink

[edit]
Ok... first feedback: it's pretty hard to figure it all out without a manual lol

All FirestARTer gave me was a list with the 7 modes in which the interface can be set.
But I haven't got a clue how to assign 4 different CC knobs from my MIDI controler to the POTs in the Bassline.

Let's try the SMS helpdesk again wink

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

Ah, that worked...

The interface let's you assign 4 different MIDI Controller Codes to the four POTs.

What I now have to do is assign 4 Controller Codes to four different knobs on the MIDI Controller (Behringer B-Control in my case).
Then I put the interface in modes 1 to 4 respectively (POTs 1-x, 1-y, 2-x and 2-y), press the LEARN button on the interface in each mode, turn the desired knob for the chosen POT, press LEARN again and I'm ready.

Works like a charm.

Oh, and these CCs can be on their own MIDI channel!
So you can assign CC40 on channel 1 to POT 1x, while CC40 on channel 2 is for POT 1y.

Re: Beta testing the MIDI interface

YouTube video: CC to POTs
(It will be there untill FirestARTer start complaining that I didn't pay royalties for the music...)

Oh, BTW, the music has nothing to do with the video... it's music I added to make the video less dull wink
