AVOID!!
Don't pay that kind of money for 6581's, or SID's at all. You can have a number of fully working C64's for that money.

i'm collecting old c64s for years , and 6581R4 (note : revision 4) are very rare. i got a bunch of r3 (about 3) the rest had no revision.

Re: 6581 R4 for ~ 37 euros

ahah, sorry, i just had a really bad meeting.

seriously, can you find any c64s?

the r4 is a smaller chip, ut it sounds the same as an r3 or r2, identical.  I'm serious...

r4's are late in the game.. but they dont offer superior sound quality or volume.

Please believe me.. getting any c64 with a 6581 and you'll be okay.

Re: 6581 R4 for ~ 37 euros

Just goto the P64 website and listen to the samples there.  You can see that all the 6581s sound pretty much the same, with small differences, but when you get to the 8580, it's a big difference.

Of course, I'd say stick with the same revisions when you get a 6581... because the sound IS different between revisions.

Re: 6581 R4 for ~ 37 euros

the sound is different between individual sids, ut not revisions.  I have several sid 6581s, and many are R4s.  They sound different to one another.  different volume, different distortion.  I think the recordings on p64 website are better explained as simply the differenced between individual chips.  Even my 8580s sound slightly different, but the differences are far more minimal.  but, for instance, i tested several 6581s to get two that sounded closest to one another to put them in my 2 breadbins for playing cynthcart, and the 2 i use are an r2 and an r4.

The difference between 8580s is really really minimal compared to how different my 6581s (irrespective of revision) are to one another.

Re: 6581 R4 for ~ 37 euros

that isn't to say that it's not fun owning one of each Revision!

The real question is, is there  a craigslist city in your area?

If so, you can often find commodores on craigslist.. or at least, i see them a lot in my area.

Ebay also has a lot of commodores.  And you'll be able to find commodore breadbins for under 37 euros!.  For sure!!  You won't guarantee an R4 (though, one of the BEST ways to assure that is to get a slimline with old style keys (not an 8580 keyboard slimline.. the traditional one, with the special characters on the ront of the keyboard).  They were the last c64s with 6581s, before the 8580 replaced it, and are most likely to have an r4.

Also, an early c128 will have an R4.

Of course, there's no guarantee what you'll find inside of a C64 or even a C128.  Since there was great compatibility, I ended up with an R2 in my breadbin AND my 128.

I think R4 is the one sitting in Sidstation?

Maybe that's why they're rare to get, Elektron already used most of them tongue

Yeah, p64 has consistently reported that my 64c has a 6581 in it, which seems unusual.  I'll be opening it up later in the month to install sid2sid and finding out for sure - I might end up having to take a closer look a Skrenos' "6581 in a 64c" thread....

There were transitional 64c's that have a 6581r4 on board.  I just blew one out a few weeks ago.
