sid 1 quieter on sid2sid

hi i got a problem with sid 1 sounding much quieter on the sid2sid board

ive tried swapping sids over, checked solder and replaced filter caps with no joy

im aware that its usually sid 2 that has this problem so tried removing r8 and swapping 3904 transistor but no improvement

anyone got ideas??

thanks in advance

Re: sid 1 quieter on sid2sid

ive also placed a sid back in to the socket on the mainboard eliminating the sid2sid board and it is still quiet so can only assume the problem is on the mainboard and not sid2sid. replaced the filter caps and still no joy

Re: sid 1 quieter on sid2sid

Hello there.
Sid2 on the sid2sid board has line out amplification basically the circuit with 2N2222 transistor, I recommend you to bypass that amplifier circuit and take output from sid2 directly.

Other thing is to use same capacitors as filters for both SIDs. According to manual of sid2sid board assembly if you cut these 4 long legs then sid1 has no capacitor filters present.

Re: sid 1 quieter on sid2sid

I just greatly improved the volume of SID2 by swapping the wires to the audio out.
The ground hum is more audible now, however.

I get the idea that the location of the SID2SID board is of much influence.
The first one I made, was put in the middle of the C64 board, next to the VIC circuits.
The one I'm working on now is much closer to the rim, near the RF-box...

Re: sid 1 quieter on sid2sid

BTW, is it possible to use the GND from pin 14 of the SID instead of another wire going to the main board?
