Long single-take recordings?

I may be a bit of a duffer here, as well as me still trying to find the time to really get into my Mssiah, but I can't seem to find a way to be able to input realtime MIDI tunes any longer than a few seconds.

I read the manual (though I could have missed it) and found how to add the little blocks and select them in order to record or plot the little snatches, piece by piece, but what I want to do is add and select dirty great huge blocks and fill them with repeated rhythms and fills, long solos or just freestyle.

I know, yes, I can do longer MIDI bits on a second 64 and run that through the MSSIAH synth mode, or build up on the PC and multi-layer SID VSTi, but I want to make nice full multi-part compos on the MSSIAH and keep it all 'in-house'.

Any help?

Re: Long single-take recordings?

You can use the 'glue' tool to glue a maximum of 4 blocks together, but that's about it.  There is no way I am aware of to record any more than this in one go (like you would in something like Cubase, for example).

That said, I don't record realtime so I may be totally wrong on this one...  big_smile

Re: Long single-take recordings?

Yes, I was scrabbling around both the screen and manual looking for Record as well.

But I noticed, in a Prophet 64 sequencer video by someone on here (Firestarter Boy I think he called himself), dirty great long blocks and I want them too.

Thanks for the glue advice. As I say I'm still getting to know the device and I think the manual could perhaps be a bit more concise.

Hmm...  Maybe in the video you saw the application had been zoomed (there is a magnify icon on the bottom of the screen) -  that would give the appearance of dirty great long blocks...

Re: Long single-take recordings?

Found him: http://firebrandboy.com/

In the video he has up there, the blocks are six 'thingies' long whilst the Mssiah book at any rate says you can only have a maximum of four glued together.

Re: Long single-take recordings?

Hmm - yes, maybe it's 8 then (from the look of that vid).

I don't have my MSSIAH in front of me or I'd double check!  Anyway, glueing's the way!  smile

"Merged sequences can be further glued to other objects as long as their maximum length does not exceed eight measures"

quote from Sequencer manual... smile

Dunno why, but I always miss bits when reading manuals, probably cos I get lost in trying to work it all as I go along. Nevertheless, 8 measures is a bit short if you want to really go into 'freeform'.
