Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

No problem

It was an Aten UC232A hooked to a laptop running Vista (I know, I know - I bought it used from my ex girlfriend, she didn't care what OS it had and I don't care enough to roll it back to XP, sicne I ahve a desktop for music and mainly use this for work and going online)

yeah, that's the one.  I chose it out of three or four that were the same price and all brands I had never heard of.  Works great so far.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Cool, good luck!

Now I jsut need to start using MSSIAH!  I had a really ba dbreakup literally the day before it showed up, so I've spent all my time since then moving and getting ymself together, then dealing with a laptop heat problem so that I can do my work.  Didn't have the time to do anything with music until last night, and I spent it all starting to learn to program FM drums.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Hello

It wiil great effectively if there will be a Mac and a Linux versions. I have a Macbook and a Gentoo computer, but no Windows here. Perhaps the best thing will be a Java version for cross platform abilities.

I bet it would work under Windows emulation.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

I tried installing the software using wine in ubuntu (old laptop) and it halted when installing the GTK+ toolkit.  I'm by no means a linux guru so maybe there's a way around this, but at least for me it didn't "just work". I've successfully used the c64tpc on the same computer running XP.

On a side note, I did some transfer speed tests.  I've been using firestarter's midi interface for my prophet64 mercilessly for over a year now and grown to love the SDR save/load function.  I decided to check how it measured up against the C64TPC as far as speed goes.

For my experiment I decided to measure the time it took to save and load the sequencer demo song. The results were as following:

SDR Load      = 0:23
C64TPC Load = 0:42

SDR Save      = 1:03 (default speed  Hi--|--Lo)
C64TPC Save = 0:28

As you can see, it took about half the time to load the song using SDR as opposed to C64TPC. However, it also took about twice as long to save using SDR as opposed to C64TPC.

Being in love with the SDR function (gotta love the graphics!) I decided to bump up the speed during save to the max HI|-----LO)

And lo and behold! it saved in 17 seconds!!! Certainly faster than the C64TPC.

I was pretty happy with those results but wondered if I'd sacrificed data integrity by using hyper speed.

..well you can be the judge, here's what came out smile

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

LustyGhost: I bought the same adapter as you, but it doesn't work for me! I am having the same problems that I had when I was using the first one. It must be something with my laptop.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

EDIT:

I read your description again, and mine's definitely not doing htat.  One thing I haven't done yet is try saving a patch, reloading it and then PLAYING IT, I've just saved and loaded empty patches to make sure that was OK (things have been really crazy here the last two weeks). It definitely saves and loads the files OK, though, and I don't expect there's any corrupted data or anything.

Not sure what to suggest for you, sorry it didn't work for you.

I had one old laptop that worked perfectly with every USB device I had EXCEPT for MOTU hardware, I never did figure it out.  Tried three different versions of Windows, different driver versions, different hardware, different cables, never had any success.

Awol wrote:

Well, when I set everything up in the C64TPC program on my laptop and then go to load it in my C64, my C64 immediately says "READY." even though the progress bar on my laptop is not full yet. While it is filling, both yellow lights on my C64TPC blink, and the green light flickers very rapidly. Once the progress bar is full, and I go to type "RUN" on my C64, I get an error.

The C64 is not supposed to say "READY" until the progress bar on my PC is full, and only the left yellow light is supposed to be on when the C64TPC is transferring data from the PC to the C64.

I am sure all my software settings, PSU, etc are correct.

Also, sometimes when I go to load the program on my C64, I get an error message on my PC and the software quits.

EDIT: I see you edited your post while I was typing.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

In a few days I'll have my desktop set up again, and it's XP.   know my c64tpc works on that computer with the serial port, but I can try it with the USB adapter just to see.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Thanks, that would be great. I really want to get this working. Since I bring my laptop everywhere anyway, a C64TPC would be so much more portable than a floppy drive plus AC adapter.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Yeah, I hope it works out for you.You should email and see if it's possible to use a different serial cable to hook the c64tpc to the USB adapter, the instructions say the cable that ships with is must be used but it doesn't say why.  If it's actually OK to use any serial cable, you could try swapping a different one in.  Doesn't seem too likely, but it's something to try (ask if it's OK first though, for sure)

Also, dumb question, but is the polarity of your power supply right?  That's another thing that would be easy to overlook and might cause problems.  Also, can it supply at least 500mv?  Both things should be marked on it somewhere.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

I am pretty sure my power supply is correct. I'm using one from some speakers I have. It says on it:

Output: 9.0V, 1600mA
For polarity: There is a symbol with a dot inside a circle. The circle is connected to a minus sign, and the dot inside is connected to a plus sign.

I don't understand why, if this works with a serial to usb adapter, they aren't just built with a usb port instead?

got my c64tpc and it works nicely. although, has anyone else experienced a lot more noise when they've got the c64tpc plugged into their c64's serial port?

A little, yes.  It seems to go away when Sequencer loads though, so it's never been a concern for me.
