Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Mine just arrived...

I'm now raiding the internets for all the C64 audio apps I can get my hands on. big_smile

This is very exciting as I've never had a disk drive for the c64 EVER.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

I'm excited to get mine.

I'm going to build some kind of small, inexpensive Windows box that I can use as a c64 fileserver and run an older software sampler on, for live use.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Anyone tried it with a serial-to-USB adapter yet?  Mine's working perfectly with the serial port on my music workstation, but the old laptop I was hoping to use for portable storage doesn't have a serial port.

No, but the author claims it works perfectly. If a serial-USB adaptor magically appears I shall report back. wink

No - I haven't tried it.  Theoretically, if the adaptor works, so should the C64TPC. smile

I guess with Linux you could probaby use WINE or something for now, at any rate.  Not sure if there are any noncommercial Windows emulators for mac.

I've asked the author - he wants to try to make a linux & mac-version but that could take some time, as he seems to be busy atm.

I am trying to connect it to my laptop (running Windows XP) with a serial/USB adapter. I can't get it to work, but I don't think the problem is the adapter. I think my C64TPC is defective. sad
Before I e-mail the guy and ask for a replacement C64TPC, I am going to test it without an adapter on a PC that does have a serial port, just to make sure. However, the only such computer that I can find is running Windows 98. This leads me to my question:

Where do I get that patch? Or is it built into v1.1 of the program?

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Hi Awol,

I'd be surprised if it's the C64TPC that's defective (though it's always a possibility).  I have 2 of them, one of which I transport quite a bit and have dropped it a couple of times with no ill effects - they are pretty well built and I think he tests them before he sends them out.

What are the symptoms?  Are you getting any lights on the unit (amber or green - will turn to 1 green light when the software hooks up with your C64)?  Is the PSU correct (9v DC)?

As Athleos says, Ahmet is pretty cool so he won't mind any questions you may have & will be happy to help you out.  smile

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Well, when I set everything up in the C64TPC program on my laptop and then go to load it in my C64, my C64 immediately says "READY." even though the progress bar on my laptop is not full yet. While it is filling, both yellow lights on my C64TPC blink, and the green light flickers very rapidly. Once the progress bar is full, and I go to type "RUN" on my C64, I get an error.

The C64 is not supposed to say "READY" until the progress bar on my PC is full, and only the left yellow light is supposed to be on when the C64TPC is transferring data from the PC to the C64.

I am sure all my software settings, PSU, etc are correct.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Hmm.  Do you have a standard C64 disk drive to confirm that your serial port works properly?  I have a C64C which is fine in every way apart from a duff serial port...

So when you click on the virtual driver at the top and the next one down (08), the light should be solid green before you start to load.  Is this the case?

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

I found that a lot of problems get fixed when you plug a fresh 9v battery in!

Sometimes C64TPC seems to get confused by MIDI shenanigans, but a bit of fiddling and resetting sorts it all out.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

I emailed Ahmet and he said the issue with older Windows versions is that he used a GTK+ library that wasn't fully compattible with earlier Windows, but that installing this earlier version of Gimp will also install a compatible version of the library and make his software work:

http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef … -setup.exe

That .exe you linked to... I tried installing it on a Windows 98 machine and it said "This program requires Windows NT version 5.0 or later".

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Ok, I found a version of the GTK+ library that does work with Windows 98:
THIS is what you need to download and install.

So my C64TPC is working fine with the Windows 98 computer... my C64 is running Usagi Yojimbo through it.

Now I just have to figure out why my serial-to-USB adapter isn't working with my laptop running Windows XP.

Awol, thanks!  That's the link he sent me, but I don't have a '98 box running right now so I didn't try it.

Re: C64TPC - tested working with MSSIAH

Ok. I'm sending my serial to USB adapter back. I was using this one.
My C64TPC is definitely working, so the problem must be the adapter. I tried fiddling with some settings but couldn't get it to work.
Has anyone else tried using a serial-to-USB adapter?

Just got mine, it's brilliant! Save/load directly to/from a directory is great not to mention now I have access to all kinds of old esoteric c64 programs.

anybody got suggestions for some sexy old c64 applications?

I just wanted to say that I tested the TPC on my laptop with a serial-to-usb adaptor and it worked perfectly.
