what are the basics for file save/recall?

HI,
What are the basics for file saving and recalling?
Is there any memory on the P64?
Should the 1571 disk drive be used?
Or what about that computer as a virtual drive thingie?
THX,
JD

Re: what are the basics for file save/recall?

Look up X1541 cable!

the XA1541 is best for laptops, XM1541 for multitasking operating systems, XE1541 for DOS.

Get an XM1541 or XA1541 (or both, they're cheap)  Then, you can buy or build a converter from the XM1541 to the XED1541, that way, you can easily use either/or.  Then you can use programs like star commander to store your commodore files directly to your hard drive, or at least, to transfer your files from disk to hard drive.

If you have the XE1541 ,ou can use a dos program calleed 64HDD, which uses your hard drive as a c64 floppy, allowing you to save and load directly from it.  THis is good, but it MUST BE IN DOS.  If you have a laptop, this means creationg a drive partition with FAT or FAT32 file system, and creating a dos 6.22 boot disk.  Putting 64HDD on that partition, along with any files you are going to laod...

you can find more detailed info on this on the net..

Saving can also be done just to disk using a 1541, 1541-II, 1571, or 1581 disk drive, with double density (NOT high density) disks.

The p64 can not save anything to itself, only to disk, or using a sound recall thingie that is part of the new P64-midi thing.

Has anyone gotten 64HDD to work properly with P64?
If I run XP on my pc, can I run 64HDD from cmd?

Don`t forget that the X1541 is usually not running with mainboards newer than Pentium
Better get an XE1541!

In fact, the only link you'll ever need in life is the one to StarCommander.
Here you'll find almost all available information on connecting a PC to a C64 vice versa.

Re: what are the basics for file save/recall?

Star commander is good, but only runs in dos (not in a dos window in xp)  So if you are bad with partitioning your hard drive to create a fat32 partition, and creating an old boot disk from an online boot disk archive, then there is a great winxp software like star commander, but the name escapes me... CBM 4 WIN, that's it..

64HDD will absolutely not run in a CMD window, even if you give CMD WIN95 compatibility.

I have never even tried to get 64HDD working, because it intimidates me.  BUt i know people who use it and say it works fine, but needs to be learned, well comprehended, before use is possible.  meh... i'm fine just transfering programs to disk and running then from disk.

Yes, it's called buying a real computer for adults. wink

Now that you can run OSX Tiger on a PC, there's no need for a mac!  HURRAY for INTEL!

If i want to have it harder and less good, then i would think about it roll

No, not even then.

This answer is like telling you to buy real computer to produce sounds, like a pc with quaddrasid roll

I'd like to have an answer that is about what i asked for, not about your oppinion.
